Cybersecurity Resources for K12 from K12 Six

The K12 SIX Essentials Series

Developed by K-12 IT practitioners, for K-12 IT practitioners—and aligned to cybersecurity risk management best practices—the K12 SIX Essentials series establishes baseline cybersecurity standards for U.S. school districts and provides guidance and tools to support their implementation. K12 SIX-recommended practices are designed to defend against the most common cyber threats facing school districts, including those identified by K12 SIX, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and school insurance carriers.

The series includes:

  • Cybersecurity Frameworks: What K-12 Leaders Need to Know — encourages state and local education leaders to adopt nationally recognized cybersecurity best practices.

The definitive annual report series on cyber incidents affecting U.S. public elementary and secondary (K-12) education institutions since 2016. Based on a data source that the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found to be the “most complete resource that tracks K-12 cybersecurity incidents, including student data breaches.”

About K12 Six:

Established in 2020 by the Global Resilience Federation, K12 SIX is a nonprofit threat intelligence and best practices sharing community for members of the U.S. K-12 education community committed to preventing and responding to cyber threats, together.

With support from K12 SIX staff leveraging dozens of data sources and analytic tools, school and district IT teams share warnings about cyber threats, help each other mitigate potential attacks, share best practices, and develop K-12 specific tools and resources.

Collaboration is the best way to keep pace with K-12 cyber threats.
